The Mid West
This Region covers the coastline north of the Perth area and the temperatures are moderate to sub tropical and cool in winter. The wind along the coastline during the spring months is excessive and the region hosts the international wind surfing at Lancelin and Coronation beaches The beaches are long and white and the sand dunes around Jurien Bay and through the Bee Keepers National Park are absolutely startling, they are just so white! This is due to the limestone base of this area. There is an Ocean Road drive that is just beautiful through the Bee Keepers National Park and the wild flowers were lovely. This region also stretches inland and the climate is vastly different to the coastal climate and is dominated by mining of iron ore, gold, nickel and other mineral resources. During this trip through WA we are not visiting this area of the Mid West. The main town of this region is Geraldton which is the major port for the region.
The Mid West also has the highest value fishing industry in Western Australia, Rock Lobsters the season starts in November with the blessing of the fleet. Western Rock Lobsters is Australia’s most valuable single-species wild capture fishery. We tried Rock Lobsters sold fresh in Lancelin.
However one of the most spectacular sites within this region is Kalbarri National Park and the Murchison River. The Wild Flowers in Kalbarri Park are amazing.
Lastly within this region The Hutt River Province can be found which seceded from Australia in 1977. It was a fascinating story. We visited this site and talked to Prince Leonard I, Leo sat on his throne. Only in Australia
