The Kimberley
The Kimberley is exciting and diverse, it is the Top End of WA with a tropical monsoon climate. It has two seasons, Wet and Dry . Wet is November to April when the Kimberley receives 90% of its rain Cyclones and flooding are common. The Region is visited by many 4 x 4 enthusiasts going to trek down the Gibb River Road: a dirt road of approximately 660 klm from Kununurra to Derby. It is a right of passage!!
The Gibb River Road was the old stock route and the site of the Home Valley Station, the homestead used in the Australia movie. This area has many beautiful gorges and unusual flora and fauna. Much of the Kimberly is inaccessible and only reached by air or boat or serious off road vehicles. A main tourist attraction is the Horizontal Waterfalls, the Buccaneer Archipelago, Cape Leveque and Mitchell Falls. We only visited the Horizontal Waterfalls the Buccaneer Archipelago and also missed Wyndham, hoping to do this next time.
Near the boarder of NT two major attraction are Lake Argyle which is the second largest man made reservoir spanning 1000 squared klm (approx. 18 Sydney Harbours), and Purnululu National Park which host the Bungle Bungles. Both are spectacular and worth a visit.
On the coast are Derby and the famous town of Broome noted for its pearling history and its drivable Cable Beach. The water is not open for swimming unless you want to share the water with salt water Crocodiles. The coast from Broome to the Pilbara has: 80 mile beach, Barnhill and Pardoo. Much of the coast is mud flats and mangroves in which the famous large Mud Crabs Live.
